The formula
cost = (watts / 1000) × hours × rate
Appliance cost is power multiplied by hours multiplied by tariff. The unit on your bill, the kilowatt-hour, is one kilowatt drawn for one hour. Low-power devices left on permanently often cost more per year than high-power ones used briefly.

Where do I find an appliance’s wattage?+
Check the label or manual — it is usually printed in watts (W). If it lists amps, multiply by your mains voltage (e.g. 5 A × 230 V = 1150 W).
