The formula
pace = total time ÷ distance
Pace is time per unit distance, the inverse of speed. Runners think in pace because it is the number you hold in your head mid-race: hitting 5:00 per kilometre for 10 km puts you at exactly 50 minutes, no mental arithmetic required.
