The formula
volume = length × width × depth; weight = volume × material density
Landscaping materials are sold by volume but delivered by weight, so both numbers matter. Depth is what people usually get wrong: too shallow and mulch fails to suppress weeds, too deep and it starves roots of air.

How deep should mulch be?+
Usually 5–8 cm. Thinner does not suppress weeds; much thicker can stop water and air reaching the roots. Keep it clear of plant stems and tree trunks to avoid rot.
Why does weight matter if it is sold by volume?+
Because delivery and handling depend on it. A cubic metre of bark is around 250 kg, but the same volume of gravel is about 1,600 kg — one is a wheelbarrow job, the other needs a vehicle that can carry it.
