The formula
tiles = room area / tile area, plus 10% waste
Divide the floor area by the area of one tile, then add a margin. The 10% allowance covers edge cuts, breakages and a few spares for future repairs; go to 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts, where cutting waste is considerably higher.
